SEPTEMBER 8, 2009, 5:49 A.M. ET.Whoa, Trigger
The latest gimmick to disguise a health-care 'public option.'.

The latest political gimmick is the notion of a "trigger" for the public option: A new government program for the middle class would only come on line if private insurance companies fail to meet certain benchmarks, such as lowering overall health spending or shrinking the number of the uninsured. This is supposed to appeal to Maine Republican Olympia Snowe, who could end up as ObamaCare's 60th Senator, while still appeasing the single-payer left.

This is insane for a number of reasons.

First, when it comes to legislation I don't EVER want things happening automatically without Congress actually voting at the time and a bill being signed into law. We're about to suffer a huge, debilitating tax increase in 2010 as a result of an "automatic" provision in tax cut legislation.

Secondly, it dumps it all on the insurance companies. This is massive government intervention in the free markets. And frankly, the insurance companies aren't where the problems are.

Finally, it is nothing more than an end-run around angry citizens who do not want the government meddling in our affairs.
