>>>Are those costs really that high?<<<

Yes. Its horrible but true. I just finished taking care of an aunt in a Philadelphia suburb nice/upper end nursing home. They are that high. It scared the hell out of me.

I can give you a good guess as to why they are that high. It's just another manifestation of socialism - just like college tuition. If you have the bucks you pay. You pay for yourself and the costs of those who can't pay. The government steps in after a while - but only after you are "spent down." In Pennsylvania, you have to disperse your funds five years before entering a home or applying for government aid. Stated differently, If you have $600K (five years @ $10K per month) you will have to give it all to the home unless you place it all somewhere else outside of the five year period before you first apply for government (Medicaide) support. Do you have anybody you trust with $600K for five years??? The attorneys love this stuff. The doctors love this stuff.

Did somebody mention Soylent Green further up the thread???

Do you feel in your guts that the system is about to bust??? Denninger moved to tiny Niceville, Florida and bought guns.

Edit: Regarding my comment about "another manifestation of socialism. There is going to be pain and hard choices in life. I am a believer in equality of opportunity, but also in accountability once the opportunity is given, and hard losses if the opportunity is blown. We don't have socialism today. We have never had socialism. What we have is bringing forward income to today to pay for equality in services today. We have also brought forward demand - think CfC - and paid for it with income brought forward. This will end ugly.

The youngsters will kill the oldsters - as well they should. I just hope they kill the banksters and Congressters before they get to me.

You betcha the costs are that high. $5,600 a month out of pocket for a crappy room at a crappy out of date nursing home, and that was 9 years ago. Slightly less if you didn't take a private room to preserve what little dignity my Grandma still retained from the Parkinsons. To this day I hate it and feel like total shit that I had little choice but to place her there. And what did you get for $5,600? A dorm room, 3 meals, and her wheelchair parked at the nurses station for hours upon hours while she slowly eroded away.

In hindsight I should have brought her home with me and just paid more for full time care. But the house wasn't big enough, the wife not prepared, and the new baby clouding my still youthful judgement.

I guess my turn will come soon.
