Have you ever heard the one about the turd in the punch bowl? No matter how great the punch is, it doesn't take a lot of turd in the punch bowl to make people not want to drink it- sometimes even SAYING you put a turd in the punch bowl is enough- try it! It's a swell party trick. Anyway, that there is an allegory for this here poltical situation. Are there better ways the issue could have been presented? Absolutely. But there are a lot of would be turd carriers out there, so I'm not sure how much difference a pretty ribbon on the punch bowl would have made.
