It was the Greeks who came up with the idea of the balance of nature. The Catholics came up with the notion of original sin. The real excuse for "YOU WILL - YOU SHALL - YOU MUST" is they are quite useless at anything as mundane as earning their own keep and must make people feel little, guilty and small to build themselves up.

A simple question like "how do you know" sends them into a complete tailspin. Another that sends these types over the edge is "you´ll see". I have seen on three occasions people have their day completely ruined by you´ll see and one needed psychiatric intervention.

What the doomsters should be worried about are mantle plumes and magnetic pole reversal. These sudden shocking events do not generate hard currency and don´t generate enough lead time for CNN so they go ignored.

Woosh. I'm not holding up my end of the conversation here very well. Lots of extraneous stuff going on in my life now--extricating myself from a real estate transaction, getting ready for a scheduled medical procedure next week--all this is keeping me from doing the really important stuff--like talking with you about climate change. (G)

First of all I think you necessarily must change the terminology with respect to the climate analysis you are labeling a "model". It certainly may be accurate and working, but without some physical representation (on paper, computer screen) I don't think model is the appropriate term. If no one else has access to it how can it model anything?

Secondly, if you believe in its efficacy write it down so that fellow travelers on this road, or better yet in the appropriate departments in Universities can have a go at it.

If I understand anything about science its that the whole idea is to get one's results out there so fellow scientists can have a go at it. Such is how we have reached this sorry state of civilization (G).

Third, we're kind of dead in the water reference this discussion until I can pull up some Hansen links for you (or if you're not pressed maybe you can see what you can do in this regard). I don't think Hansen's model or any climatology model can predict WHEN a volcano can erupt. What they can do, to the best of my knowledge, is predict future effects based on assumptions or data about what is in the atmosphere. Call it "tweaking" if you will but all modeling involves tweaking.

Well that's all for now. We will see what the morrow brings.
