It was an entirely new attitude amongst American people. Rather than focusing on the horrible economy, they had a common purpose and goal which brought with it a sense of optimism.

The spending of $2 Trillion (in today's dollars) on the war effort did put people to work, but massive spending had already failed. It was about the return of consumer confidence. Which is what we really need now.
