Even in Bush's worse moments, no one ever crossed the line to such an extent. And if they had, they would have been pilloried (rightly so). The sorry excuse "someone ELSE might have done this in some alternative universe", just won't wash with the country. That's an excuse my 5-year old might try. It was a sad commentary of the anger and emotion that rules many on the right.
