<< But the damage has been done. Indeed, Wilson's outburst is an almost perfect summation of 2009 -- President Obama appears big, Republicans appear small. Are the opponents of the Obama plan on this thread, Republican?

Not me.

What I am is a retired analyst for the federal government. That framework determines how I look at any public policy issue. I have no quarrel with the goals of this initiative but with the design of the solution. It has not been demonstrated to be a workable solution let alone the best among alternatives. I would have been embarrassed to have put forth such a proposal.

I think after this speech there will be a few republicans with a conscience that will swing to Obama

Partisans are predisposed to look at their side as heroes and the opposition as evil. Each side thinks it represents truth. Each side has it's own bugbears. You can tell the partisanship of anyone by the specters he automatically conjures. Pick any issue and wait to see whether the person references fat cats or welfare queens and you know his partisanship. Expect nothing thoughtful to ensue.

Having a conscience is not at issue but rather a brain.
