Considering the biggest threat to US forces in Afghanistan is remodeled tank mines we put there to be used against the Russians...then aren't we still helping Al Qaeda?

Paying for the religious indoctrination/education of millions into fundamentalist W'habbist Sunni ways of thinking, extoiling 'Martyrdom operations' and Talibanic repression of women and most 'Western' notions of Democracy and non-Theocratic governance is certainly supporting/aiding al Qaeda and Taliban and various other Sunni extremists --- it sows the very fields for their emergence and mans the training camps.
