Ya know, I just tried it again and I do get Properties - Appearance by right clicking on the desktop. No idea whether I just missed it the previous time or what, but it is there.

Nevertheless, I still don't know how to use the full screen in resolution 1280 x 1024, which is the main question. If anyone has a suggestion for how to accomplish that, please provide.

What kind if video card are you using. It sounds like you're using the wrong scaling. What driver are you using for the card?

Sisoft says the video adapter is Intel 82915g/gv/910gl

the driver is 'ialmrnt5.dll'

Under supported video modes 1280 x 1024 is listed, so it seems it should work normally (without the black side bars).
