As you say it is halfways a "flight to safety", the other half persistent $$$ weakness.

Normally the Yen only spiked that high and became an automatic sell thereafter. But this time.,.might be different since the carry trades are in neutral area and in no way oversold. So nothing to automate right now rather ride the wave.

$ weaknes is pronounced in that it never seems to regain any territory regardless of the direction of other trades; its a trend...if I would short a few contracts on market weakness all I get is a few pips and thats it.
