I think Obama is truly acting as a Centrist. He's in the middle of the field, so if you look at him from the left, he looks right, if you look at him from the right he looks left. He's probably really standing on the 45 yard line (to the left). I suspect he would be more comfortable on the 30 yard line but his political instincts tell him he would get nothing done. The rancor from the right may force to the 30 yard line though, as he gets no credit for his more centrist positions.
