I've never been able to get anyone to see it who didn't already. Nor have I ever seen an argument that came close to disabusing me of the notion that a lower standard of living is inevitable, maybe even civil unrest.

"Disabusing" you? Do you have any doubts?

I think it's simple math. Transfer of wealth from productive individuals to those who for the most part engaged only in consuming is a misallocation of resources. To some degree such transfer is necessary as part of a "safety net" in a society.

Regrettably, politicians have discovered that taking from Peter and giving to Paul gives them far more money, power and job security... rather than sticking to ideals of limited government. So, they'll go to great lengths in order to convince themselves and others that just about ANY redistributionist scheme must be a good thing.
