What would social mobility downwards look like? Cannot find the decadence from wealth to newly poor. That worries me. The only example of gracious return to natural size.

4.000 years ago, Nile provided a nice way of living for the people there and the people build the equivalent of Apollo program and the aircraft carriers.

They had social security and the people towed the line. Built temples. Respected the high priests and the king. Build pyramids, tombs for the dead kings and bought lots of gold inside.

They ran out of floods that fertilized their river margins, as the last glaciations ice melted and the floods were not as big as they used to do.

They returned to their natural size.
The others were social decadence that allowed empires to crumble assaulted by invading hordes that get at their soft belly.

Modern governments are used to distribute wealth created by the economy which they appropriated via taxation. They derive their power from that money they can distribute to their constituents.
Once returning to natural size, they have still their commitments to pay but the money is not coming as copiously as it was used to. See California case.

People do not look on the revenue source of the government. They blame the government if the money is not coming out of their coffers forgetting that it is THEY who put that money there. The government only do some sort of equalization with that money.

A sign of things to come is the this effect of less money to distribute. People are blaming Obama to reform Health system, which is very necessary. They may not agree on how, they have to agree that times has come to rein in spending.

Reining in spending, means manage the limited amount of money. Continue spending what you do not have means, you do not own what you have. It belongs to others.
