Reliable Internet transaction processing enabled by new Jolt for NonStop TUXEDO
Tandem, a Compaq company, today announced its latest NonStop(R) TUXEDO(R) open transaction processing software for business-critical computing. The new offerings are the first to allow customers to create robust and cost-effective distributed transaction processing applications spanning a broad range of enterprise computing platforms, databases, and operating systems --from Windows NT(R) to Tandem's highly scalable NonStop Himalaya(R) parallel processing platform. The new products include the initial release of NonStop TUXEDO transaction monitor for Windows NT Server, along with release 2 of Tandem's value-added NonStop TUXEDO transaction monitor for NonStop Himalaya. Both are implementations of BEA Systems Inc.'s popular BEA TUXEDO. Together, the new software enables Windows NT Server based TUXEDO applications to interoperate with high-volume, high-reliability NonStop TUXEDO and Tandem Pathway transaction processing applications running on NonStop Himalaya servers, as well as with the wealth of TUXEDO applications running on UNIX(R) systems. A third offering, Tandem's new Jolt for NonStop TUXEDO, takes transaction processing to the Web, allowing Java clients to reliably and securely access enterprise transaction services over the Internet. Said Bill Heil, senior vice president and general manager of Tandem's NonStop Software business unit, "Our aim is to enable the integration of enterprise transaction systems so that customers can extend the value of their business-critical transaction processing investments. We're doing this by bringing the cost-effective Windows NT Server platform into their enterprise fold, and by providing trusted turnkey Internet access to transaction services."
Customer Experiences
Several companies are already benefiting from the enterprise integration capabilities inherent in the latest NonStop TUXEDO releases. Said Katsutoshi Nakano, a general manager, Yamaichi Information Systems Co., Ltd., "With NonStop TUXEDO, Tandem has brought reliable, scalable transaction processing to the open computing world. We are now in a position to grow NonStop TUXEDO applications to an immense size." Said David Curry, senior manager at Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP), one of the world's largest independent computing services firms, "In our experience, NonStop TUXEDO, with its identical APIs for Himalaya and Windows NT implementations, has done just what it promised to do. It has removed a major headache from the development of client/server transaction processing applications, since we no longer have to try to build our own distributed solutions using middleware."
NonStop TUXEDO on Himalaya -- combining open with business-critical
NonStop TUXEDO on NonStop Himalaya is on an open transaction environment underpinned by Tandem's proven parallel processing transaction services architecture. It provides fault tolerance for 24 X 7 operations, linear scalability for cost-effective growth to literally thousands of processors, dynamic load balancing for performance, a single application image for easy management, plus transparent recovery from faults. Release 2 adds support for a function called /TDomains, which provides transactional interoperability between Windows NT Server and UNIX system based TUXEDO implementations.
NonStop TUXEDO on Windows NT Server -- roadmap for business-critical Windows NT Server
NonStop TUXEDO on Windows NT Server, Release 1, meanwhile, runs on any Intel based Windows NT computer including Compaq Proliant servers. Like the Himalaya implementation, it also supports transactional interoperability via/TDomains to other TUXEDO environments as well as to Tandem's widely deployed Pathway transaction environment. Release 2 of NonStop TUXEDO on Windows NT Server will be available in Spring 1988 and will add the same advanced clustering capabilities that provide the foundation for NonStop TUXEDO on NonStop Himalaya, Release 2. This will allow Tandem to bring uninterrupted operations and linear scalability to the Windows NT Server environment for high-volume, business-critical transaction processing. In addition, because the APIs are identical to all other TUXEDO transaction monitor platforms, customers can easily scale up from Windows NT server to the NonStop Himalaya parallel processing platform when appropriate. Likewise, Himalaya customers can extend their NonStop TUXEDO applications to the Windows NT platform running on Compaq enterprise systems.
Universal client access and trusted Internet transaction processing
On the client side, NonStop TUXEDO transaction monitor services can be accessed via a full range of PCs and workstations as well as traditional Pathway clients including ATMs and banking terminals. In addition, "pure" Java clients (applets or standalone applications) can now access NonStop TUXEDO on Windows NT Server via a Java interface called Jolt for NonStop TUXEDO. Jolt ensures that transactional integrity is maintained despite unreliable Internet connections, massive scalability requirements, and the Internet's inherent inability to retain current transaction states. Simple Web browser access can also be achieved using Common Gateway Interfaces (CGIs) or Tandem's Internet server, (iTP(TM) WebServer(TM)). NonStop TUXEDO on NonStop Himalaya Release 2, and NonStop TUXEDO on Windows NT Server, Release 1, are both shipping now. Jolt for NonStop TUXEDO is also available now.
