Based on the options I've seen as a self employed individual, and what happens if you have a pre-existing condition, I don't trust the 'private' insurance industry to do what is necessary without a government push. So, I support a public option. If Obama hadn't been elected we'd still be at square one IMO...

I am sympathetic to that and fully support changes to provide portability.

It seems to me pretty much everyone wants to provide for portability. And unfortunately, this may be one of those areas everyone agrees on that doesn't get enacted because of over-reaching by the Left on this legislation.

They should (and perhaps are) start out by working toward the areas everyone agrees on. If they could just do this much, it may be a lot of the perceived big problems won't be so big. When you're solving big problems a lot of times the best approach is to tear off something you can chew and get going on it.

This is a part of the process that could get lost in a sprint to get something passed quickly.
