William, >>I wonder why brokerage firms never recommend cash

They do. Right now Merrill is recommending you sell into strength in certain sectors, i.e. generate cash. They are telling us to hold this cash or put it into US long treasuries on strength. They are also recommending to patiently wait with cash until this mess is over. Their current time frame is at least a couple of months. This team will be in constant communication with the clients.

Now I don't think the media understands the difference between an individual investor recommended portfolio and a Mutual Fund. These Mutual Funds that use Merrill for advise will be getting advise based on being at least 70% or some other % invested because they have to be invested. The question here is where to put your fund assets with the least risk and for certain Merrill right now is telling these folks to by US Treasuries.

Regards,
Joan

Mike, it occurs to me that diamond prices are holding up (cartel of course). Gold is in great supply and is being sold off by central banks. Central banks hold no diamonds. The widespread nature of diamond owning makes diamonds an interesting alternative to precious metals in a decline like this.
