I think you are correct that the first shot is old - a 1997 Promise Keepers rally, IIRC. Malkin and others have issued corrections after mistakenly referencing it. But the other shots, along with others available via a quick google, support much higher numbers than 70-100k. Here's a shot from a traffic camera at 14th & E, looking toward the Capitol.

The distance covered there is about the same as from the Capitol to the Washington Monument, only it's about 1/4 the width of the Mall (except up at Federal Plaza, nearer the camera, where it is obviously wider).

Sully's third shot is also looking down Pennsylvania, closer to the Capitol. And his third shows the crowd still coming down Pennsylvania as the earlier folks move out onto the Mall.

The green areas of lawn, BTW, were roped off - reserved for some other event. You can't judge the crowd size by the existence of green space.

My guestimate is a half million or so, and I think it a reasonable guess.

I've heard several reports [posted at least one] that put the number in the 1.5 - 2 million range. Glenn Beck said a college took some pics & did an analysis [body density, area covered, etc.] & they put it around 1.7 million. Others say several hundred thousand.

Me - anything over 100K is great. There were other demonstrations nationwide too. And these folks have jobs.
