1) Washington did agonize over the problem of slavery and he set his own slaves free. Jefferson only freed those related to his wife. 2) "we use to engage in pervasive cannabilism, slavery and yet today abhor those things?" Part of that is the rise of the higher religions, including Christianity. Christianity developed an anti-slavery ethic and stamped it out in those parts of the world it had influence over. Infanticide of children was common in ancient Mediterranean and in Europe, not to mention things like the slaughter of humans and animals for entertainment. Now that liberals are waging war on Christianity, we can expect more barbaric practices to come out in our society. Abortion is a sacred right now for liberals, infanticide and the "mercy" killing of older people will be next on the agenda. Sexual slavery of children is morally acceptable to some liberals already - the recently aired ACORN videos are evidence of that.
