Technology has increased their productivity to the point where, surely, they can pay their hired help a living wage.

One would think so.. But that technology isn't cheap. However, I guess many of them did a cost/benefit analysis on the merits of automating tasks that were previously done with labor.

But here again, this is a role for government, IMO, where they need to take those displaced workers and provide retraining opportunities that fulfill their human potential. It won't succeed for everyone, if simply because a few J6P's have little ambition or willingness to change, but it will provide opportunity.. And that's the difference between providing government jobs as "make work" and making sure that opportunity for prosperity exists.
