BancAmerica Robertson Stephens analyst Dan Niles said a closer examination of the cuts reveals something positive. Intel opted to reduce prices for Pentium chips with MMX by 15 to 20 percent, and "a much less than expected 13 to 24 percent for Pentium IIs," Niles said in a research report, adding that the surprise indicates that unit demand is "fairly good, and that Intel is moving further ahead of its competitors "as PC vendors move to the Pentium II architecture."
