I agree that dim monitors certainly don't help. I have a MacBook Pro beside my 24" Cinema display. Both are bright, but the MacBook uses LED backlighting and that sucker is BRIGHT! I also have a Samsung monitor on a Mac mini. That's a very nice bright monitor also, but nothing beats the MacBook Pro - I actually have to turn the brightness down at times. You can get nice 1920 x 1080 monitors these days for above and below $300. They're shorter than the 1920 x 1200 of the Cinema display, but they are still nice - they're made to fit HDTV and I expect they're cheap because they're simply small HDTVs without the tuner and speakers.
