I had a client that had 60k in Chrysler Financial bonds back then....If memory serves, they were paid in full at maturity.

I remember the day Chrysler cut their dividend and put Lee Iacocca in charge. The stock had a decent gain considering the news. Mr. Iacocca was a difference maker for the company.

Loan guarantees is the way I remember it.
