I ran into a situation at a tradeshow in Chicago where we were setting up our booth and needed to run a temporary extension cord. I had the the extension cord and the outlet was about 20' away. When I went to plug in the cord, one of the union booth putter uppers stopped me and said that I needed a union electrician to plug the cord in. However, there were no union electricians onsite that day. So we had to take our equipment back to the hotel room to do the setup.

Just one more example of how unions make our economy less efficient.

And then there was the movie production that I worked on once....OMG...what a joke.

A couple of observations on the previous topics:

1.) All men are pigs: Yes and I do my best to uphold our credo.

2.) Moving to a another country because this one is......whatever: I trace my lineage on both sides of the family tree to the 1600's. The thought of leaving would never occur to me. I think I'll stick around and fight.

The union workers (most, it seems....it's hard not to paint with a broad brush here) have the mind set that if I work too efficiently I am just working myself out of a gravy train job. So they have adopted what we (non-union) call the Union Shuffle. i.e. Don't get in a hurry, don't over-do, and...god forbid...don't start a task if it is less than an hour 'til 'break'.

Back in the 1970s I worked for a sort time on the docks in Beaumont, TX. We'd show up at the union hall and if they didn't have enough union bodies, they'd send us out on a job. One day I was on a securing gang, securing heavy equipment on the deck of a ship. I was told several times I was working too fast and to slow down.

I've never liked unions.
