The people at politico.com think they own the word 'politico.'

They don't own the word, but they own the trademark rights in the use of the domain name "politico.com" and are entitled to enforce their trademark against confusingly similar uses by others. The process of disputing such use is the UDRP - Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy.

icann.org

The problem with Politico's position is that domain owners generally have to show use in bad faith (the UDRP is meant to kill domain squatters.) I don't think they can meet that.
