my imac hard drive filled up very quickly: i discovered that half of it is as asl log files.

Use a program like cocktail or tinkertool to rotate and delete caches and log files.

What application on your system is generating such large log files?

cleans suggestion is good. But when asking for computer help I'd suggest this:

FIRST

try dealmac forums:

forums.dealmac.com

or the forums on the Apple site.

They are more specific for help.

SECOND

Many times, when asking for help, it helps to know something about your computer:

Which iMac? there are dozens of different types, and two completely different processor families.

Which OS? there are at least 4 and probably more you could be running.

Are you running Windows in addition to Mac OS?

How did you determine it was asl log files? Any particular type?

Is this a new iMac or an old one where this just started?

Did you just install a new system?

Have you installed any new apps lately?

Have you changed anything lately?

That's the system log file. Nuke at will - but if it's filling up that quickly, you might want to look at it first to see if it isn't telling you something is really @#$@ed.
