the taxable event would be applicable to the Soros org. (unless they can prove they gave it for another reason) still... if the IRS can argue that the $$ was given to erase the loan ... i think that smells like a duck.... and if it is a duck... they get ducked... :)

i would say that qualifies as a gift (not 100% sure)...

on gifts... the tax is imposed on the person making the gift, (not on the one receiving it)
