Come on, health care reform has been a front burner issue for almost every President.

Well, it was for Clinton, but it was a campaign issue just like it was for Obama. Reform was not a "front burner" issue for Bush, although, Bush did Part D (which IMO was just him trying to have some kind of domestic legacy). Bush did accomplish some pretty serious stuff in health care, but not "reform" as it wasn't important.

Looking back, health care reform was not a front burner issue for any other president until you get back to Nixon. Before that, I think you'd go back Truman. So, clearly, it hasn't been a "front burner" issue for almost every president.

It wouldn't be an issue today other than the fact that Obama MADE it an issue. That's not to say we don't need reform; Obama can be credited with bringing the issue to the forefront.

There is nothing new about this. Health care reform was big for Clinton, but his BIG "hot button" issue was the economy. And Americans ate it up. There was nothing wrong with the economy -- we'd had a mild, normal recession and come back out of it, but Clinton was able to win the presidency ON THAT ISSUE. (It is commonly believed that the Bush "Read My Lips" pledge did him in, and that certainly contributed -- but James Carville's sign didn't say "Read My Lips", it said, "Its the Economy".

That's what winning the presidency is about. Take an issue, make it important to the voters, then make it your own. 90% of voters are easily manipulated like this.
