JUST OUT! MARINA DEL REY, Calif., Oct 30 (Reuters) - Quarterdeck Corp, expanding its line of personal computer utility programs, will unveil a new software product on Monday that will help PC users troubleshoot common glitches. The new product, called Realhelp, continuously checks for conflicts between different software, saves the user's work on documents, monitors hardware performance to warn of impending failure and answer common questions about PC problems. Quarterdeck, based in Marina Del Rey, said it plans to sell two versions, a deluxe version for $59.95 and a regular version for $39.95. Both products will be available by the end of November, the company said. The product is part of Quarterdeck's attempt to retool its product line to compete in the so-called helpware software market. The rising complexity of personal computers has led to a big demand for programs that help users keep their machines running smoothly. "This is a major, major product for us," said Curt Hessler, Quarterdeck chief executive. "It will be a major money earner for the company." In the past two years, Quarterdeck has been scrambling to find a new source of revenue since demand for its flagship -- the QEMM memory management product -- dried up. In the helpware niche, Quarterdeck faces competition from bigger rivals such as Symantec Corp (NASDAQ:SYMC), McAfee Associates Inc (NASDAQ:MCAF) and Cybermedia Inc (NASDAQ:CYBR). Earlier this month, Quarterdeck said it expects to report a fourth-quarter loss of several million, and likely will faces losses into fiscal 1998. Hessler said he hopes the fourth-quarter loss will be the bottom before a turn-around. Copyright 1997, Reuters News Service
