Obama may not have run openly as a a statist, but that's where his political instincts are. I don't think this was so hard to guess.

No, it was hard to guess. Obama made it hard. He kept making centrist statements. Sean Hannity guessed, but how many agreed with him? Even most Republicans thought Obama was too bright to try to govern as a left-wing ideologue. They thought he was just pandering to the progressives. Hannity has had a whole parade of guests on to admit, "Hannity, you were right."

Both major candidates in the election were statists. There was no choice via the electoral process.
