I suspect Republicans think that opposing Obama's initiatives "on principle" may be beyond the mental capacity of our public. For instance, the central objection to the so called healthcare reform should be that it would drastically increase the size of the federal government. That is more important than details of imagined rationing. There is always rationing, and everyone understands that. We need to argue not about such specifics, but whether or not the public would WANT to change drastically the political structure of America - the structure which served us well and allowed us to become a great and prosperous nation.

One strong argument on the part of the pro-reformists is that many advanced countries have government run healthcare, and that didn't cause them to become "too socialist". That's a good question... one possible answer is that maybe it did, but they just don't know it yet.

It's been said that freedom and democracy do not come free. The first step in approaching all these new initiatives is to evaluate how they fit our philosophy and our character as a nation. If it turns out that we no longer have character and philosophy as a nation, then... we have nothing to lose.

The vehemence is a result of the insanely high stakes. Our so called representative should not be making such important decisions for all of us. It sets the country up for anger and worse. You should pay less attention to the symptoms and more attention to the first causes.
