Did you see this NY Times article this week re tort reform?

Also, when I read the "Cost Conundrum" article from the New Yorker a few weeks ago where the writer, a doctor, used two places in Texas to contrast individual medical costs I got the impression that what you call "defensive medicine" has now become the medical profession's form of "welfare" and maybe even corrupting the profession.

I just talked to a surgeon who has been my customer since '93 about his annual software upgrade -- about $3,500.

He said, "You know, I'm going to skip it this year. Because if this new legislation cuts my fees, this is going to be my last year. I'm getting the hell out of here."

Guy is in his late 50s, has plenty more years to practice, but is dead serious.

The unintended consequences of passing this legislation are going to be huge if it happens.
