I'm with you in that there are a lot of things about Apple products I have problems with. I don't like the throw away aspect either. This is a problem with the iMacs which are not as upgradable as the Mac Pros, so for me they won't last as long. The OSX upgrades have been poorly managed IMHO. The interfaces are not as good as they were.

I can see how a non swappable battery could be a problem for travelers. They really should have an option for an external power source at the very least.

However in general I have worse problems with competing products.

Purely in terms of money Macs are cheaper. They might not look like it to someone who doesn't think about personal efficiency. But if you spend two days reinstalling or screwing with Windows how much money did the damn thing save you? Do man hours count? Does stress count? I think so. Particularly over several years.

So the bottom line to investors is, Apple treads a fine line between quality and price. So far it seems they've made good choices and in the near to medium future that does not look like it's going to change. They are growing and more profitable than most other tech companies. In fact I see no companies that are a better investment. Wish I could find some.

As for the long term, I'm hoping to migrate to Linux after my next Mac but who knows that's 5 or ten years down the road.

>>Bottom line, what bothers me the most is that I see the Mac line of products moving rapidly toward the iPhone model of buy it, don't think about upgrading it, instead throw it away in a year or so. <<

D, G -

While I can understand that it might not work for you to have a non-swappable battery, even with the truly amazing battery life of the new MBPs, these computers are not designed to be thrown away in a year or so.

The battery isn't swappable, but replacing it is quite easy.
