The support cost would not be zero. People would call in for technical support. And if they weren't calling in to Apple because Dell agreed to do OS X software support for their own machines, then Apple would have lost control of yet another aspect of the user experience.

And do you really believe Dell would pay full retail for the privilege of installing OS X? I don't know what you're basing that supposition on.

Seriously, I don't think it makes sense for Apple to do this. But we've been around this block a few times before.
