>>I am very comfortable with computers, but this whole Hackintosh thing seems like the biggest pain in the ass ever. After buying the correct hardware and the operating system, then spending the hours needed to get it working... You would be better off just buying a Mac Mini.<<

Robert -

I agree, mostly, except in the case of the really cheap netbooks. If you can get a Dell Vostro A90 (which is the same as the discontinued Mini 9) for around $250, then spend a couple of hours installing OS X on it, that seems like a reasonable thing to do. Especially considering that the Vostro A90 is pretty much 100% compatible out of the box.

I think it's going to make sense to go that route in order to get working OS X computers into the hands of our twins. We can't afford to buy them both MacBooks.

Really, from what I'm reading, the process is only slightly more complicated than installing Snow Leopard on a Mac. But for most computer users, it's too much. Which is another reason why this whole Hackintosh thing is not a big threat to Apple.

Other than the half hour to create the SL disc image, it was about two clicks of the mouse longer than a regular Apple hardware install.
