GST, we agree that economics is a helluva incentive. i think >$5 / gallon sustained would just start to trigger changes in people's behavior on a scale that would be noticeable. the problem there is that each non retiree household above the poverty line is on the hook for $1.25 million in unfunded obligations (over and above what we already pay in taxes) and a $2 marginal tax in gas would have an intense breaking effect on the economy. well, until the banksters decided the best way to get their hands on the extra tax money was to go fight a war or similar, anyway.
