I think he's doing the math: if margin on A, B and C is 35%, and margin on A is greater than 50%, then one or both of B & C have margin of less than 30%.

The math needs to be redone then. If the margins on A are only 50% and the margins on B and C are 30%, then, in the simplest case where A=B=C=1/3

Total margin = 1/3(50%) + 1/3(30%) + 1/3(30%) = 36.67%
