According to the CEMA, this year's production of DVD players bound for dealers' shelves was 212,843 between April and October 3. CEMA expects production to increase for the Christmas season, resulting in production of over 400,000 by the end of this year, and they estimate that over 1.4 million will be made in 1998. The reason for the increase is the low price of players, the increase in products produced by well-known brand names, and the growing number of movies, music and other entertainment media available on DVDs. Half a year after their introduction, they are already rivaling VCRs and CD players.
