If the federal government were to only do what was mandated by the COnstitution it would be much easier to monitor their activities.

Besides the three branches of federal government they are authorized to: maintain a common currency; provide for the common defense; provide a unified foreign policy.

Everything else is superfluous and could be provided more efficiently at a more local level.

Think about it. If Massachusetts wants to provide massive assistance to the homeless and Connecticut does not then the homeless will flock to where they don't have to do anything for a living.

If the churches in Kansas want to provide services that the state does not then there will be exceptional volunteerism and the cost of providing services will be well below market rates.

Under such a system the costs would be born by those who are most interested in providing services.

Obviously if we were to return to a prudent federal government there would be consequences. There would be an adjustment period as well.

I agree it also goes for defense contractors, but why "especially"? Is it just a matter that they receive large payments (and other companies, groups, or organizations with similar large payments should also receive such a higher level of scrutiny or is it more than that in your opinion?
