That's one way it could go. I've been thinking about that model.

I think of computers generic tools that can be modified to become specific tools. For example a standard computer can become a powerful graphic machine or it can become game. Perhaps THAT era is over.

You may be partly right. It could be that the hardware will be designed to do one important thing really well, but software will allow it to do other things that are less important tolerably well.

Maybe the hardware will become more modular like software or your Zildjian array. Maybe you just need one...
