>> The divide is getting bigger

Of course. Rich people have an easier time making money than poor people. No doubt about that.

>> I seem to recall statistics that over the past decade we have had a pretty weak recovery since the 2000 downturn in terms of jobs

Actually, employment was fairly strong until the recent recession. Recessions happen. You can't stop them from happening. But the recovery will also happen at some point.

The big problem today is whether we're going to be able to recover from the massive spending programs put in place by the new administration. The threat of a major round of inflation is huge and we're going to see steeply increasing interest rates in an effort to stop it. That could well kill the economic recovery. Hopefully not.

The future for American prosperity is bleak because of the wild spending -- not only of the Obama administration, but also because of Bush's failure to control it.

Today, it was announced the Forbes 400 couldn't even come up with 400 people who meet the criteria for inclusion. That speaks volumes.

The divide is getting bigger

Let me try a different angle to get to where you're coming from. Why does the size of the divide matter? As long as the folks at the bottom are not digressing but rather improving their standard of living, why does it matter?
