I'd guess it is a confluence of date cycles, with some liberal application of guesswork, framed in such a way that, retrospectively, one can look back and find out exactly what was so important at that "turn date" or some such. Looking backward at the universe of hundreds of financial trappings, no doubt something important or almost important can be pinned on the turn date to make it seem like the expectation of the turn resulted in something profound and undeniably prescient, thus confirming the relevance of the cycles even though nobody knows what the hell they are predicting until afterward when they can see what happened in hindsight.
