Not necessarily. Some things go down, some go up. Rent and food come before DVD players... and how much of an incremental 'standard of living' improvement is a DVD player over a VHS player? I know folks who would say it's a 'negative improvement'.

Bottom line is inflation has gone up more than wages... a net decline in standard of living. The rest is all personal value judgements... very fuzzy.
