And this is a major element of the standard of living. When you can buy a DVD player for $38 at Walmart, even the poor can afford one. Not necessarily. Some things go down, some go up. Rent and food come before DVD players... and how much of an incremental 'standard of living' improvement is a DVD player over a VHS player? I know folks who would say it's a 'negative improvement'. Bottom line is inflation has gone up more than wages... a net decline in standard of living. The rest is all personal value judgements... very fuzzy.
