Letcherman and Jimmy Carter have something in common - both carrying around an almost 40 year old load of bitterness.

According to one of the Uncle John's Bathroom Readers (:-)) Leno got the slot because a) he went out and made nice with the affiliates to build support for his show and b) Letterman was such a pain in the ass. He insulted NBC executives by name on the air, banned them from staff parties and fought over control of reruns of Late Night. He also never told anyone at NBC how badly he wanted to succeed Johnny Carson, he just said he "wanted to be considered." In the end it was no contest, Leno the team player and Letterman the jackass.
