I (and good number of folks I know) were brought up in a given religion ... and walked away. Also, in many countries in SE Asia or much of Asia, the only education available comes from a religious group.

Pointing to Pol Pot as an example of a Buddhist is about as useful as pointing to Ted Haggard (or any number of other disgraced pastors) as an example of a Christian.
