The Electoral College was kind of a necessity in the 1770's.

Also, it carries some residual effect from the British system.

We had an agrarian society back then and it wasn't really feasible to run an election based on a simple majority even if they had wanted to, which they didn't.

Back then we were still considered more of a "confederation of states" than a unified country.

Today it's a different story.
