Peter, maybe you can enlighten us all further...

lets follow the logic, you said:

<<<< I guess you don't abide by the Old Testament much. One of the most popular stories of the bible is Noah's Ark, which despite its appeal to children, is the tale of a vengeful god who wipes out every living thing on land, except Noah and the ark of animals.

Sodom and Gomorrah was a similar tale.

Not exactly loving and forgiving.
>>>>
___________

Extrapolation:

noah's ark & sodom and gomorrah = not loving, not forgiving, or as you put it the acts of a "vengeful god"

I can assume from what you said that if God exist he "must" then be "loving and forgiving"

I can also assume that YOU deduce that if God is loving and forgiving then an act of destruction -- like the flood or Sodom and Gomorrah -- means he is "vengeful" and that vengence, love, and forgiveness cannot simultaneously exist within the same character without contradiction.

Please help us understand why this is not possible.

eeks - my toast just burnt (god must hate me)

put another way, is spanking a child who is touching a hot stove vengeful if the child has no feeling in his hands and his flesh is burning, but he doesn't know it?

in the same way, god "spanked" a world that had run amok into all kinds of evil. as for babies - you mean the ones they didn't sacrifice, right? or the babies who would grow up and eventually sacrifice others? or those babies that would just cheer the process? is it a stretch to believe that god understands human psychology much better than you or i do? he also understands right and wrong better than you or i, too.

effectively, god reduced a miserable existence by up to 80-90 years, in the worst case scenario and "catapulted" these people into the resurrection where get to meet god and live in peace and harmony for eternity (as long as they don't reject god's way of caring for others equal to oneself - if they do, they will forfeit their life - again, a kindness on the part of god).

in the context of an eternity of peace, harmony, joy and a spirit society caring for others equal to themselves, 80-90 years of marginal misery isn't worth a whole bunch, wouldn't you agree?

there are lots of boogey men out there, but god is not one of them.
