You may not agree with me, and truth be told I've not thought it out in a very exacting, scientific manner, but I liken the rule of diminishing returns on each high-frequency trade (as more participants enter the space) to the rebates now being paid out by utilities, under the umbrella aegis of regional public interests organizations, who administer peak-shaving, demand-response programs. Sure, each is sustainable, even if only asymptotically so. But the answer to the question that will ultimately determine whether each of these regimes remains popular, or where equilibrium will be achieved ultimately, is: At what level of diminishing return would either of these regimes still be desirable to smaller and mid-sized players?
