The President would have been criticized *twice* as much, and *twice* as loudly if he HADN'T taken the one day to lobby for the US bid.

(The howls of "unpatriotic" and "too wrapped-up inside the Beltway to stand-up for America"... "too insular" would have been unremitting from the EXACT SAME folks who are howling now... the talk radio gibbons and the stream-of-consciousness ranters on the cable shows. They don't really need much of anything as grist for their mill... this is their bread and butter. :-)

Now... as to the IOC's decision itself:

Lula always said he would win.

Apparently his charts --- showing that *ZERO* Olympics had ever been held on the South American continent... while some 33 (if memory serves...) had been held in Europe, and 23 on the North American continent are what carried the day with the IOC commissioners.

Despite the fact that Rio's bid posted the LOWEST SCORES on the standardized test that the IOC applied to qualify and rank (preparedness, financials, etc., etc.) all the cities' bids --- it seems that the IOC mostly ignored that and was swayed by the thought of 'opening up an entire CONTINENT' to the Olympic movement... (and all the financial rewards that would then appertain to the Olympic movement and it's sponsors over the years to come....

Not a logic that I can really fault them for. :-)

Obama’s Olympic failure will only add to doubts about his presidency
timesonline.co.uk

Chicago’s dismal showing yesterday, after Mr Obama’s personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good — but carries no heft.
