It wasn't the origin. It was a time frame you picked partly through the discussion.

The time frame I was using was "historical," meaning throughout the last century or so but even before that. The lot of the poor has improved considerably throughout that period. They made a musical out of Les Miz, for heaven's sake. The only people who don't have the necessities, at least for more than brief periods, are street people. Sometimes we hear of people in cities in the north not having heat or air conditioning and suffering for it but we hear about that because it's anomalous so it makes the news. If it were common, it wouldn't be in the news.
