Obama selected McChrystal.

I think it was on Petraeus's recommendation (being the CENTCOM commander) to Gates (SecDef).

McChrystal is a warrior, not a waiter. When he's asked for his recommendation and he sees the political hacks in DC trying to water it down, he's smelling "Vietnam" all over again. And this is the type of attitude that officers like he, Colin Powell, and Schwartzkopf vowed would not pervade the military again.

You can't have the President of the US discarding, or castrating, the battle strategy of the commander on the ground and expect that commander to remain silent.

McChrystal is the kind of guy who will resign if Obama doesn't give him the tools to do the mission he's been assigned to do.

McChrystal and Petraeus BOTH understand that a wholistic approach is necessary in Afghanistan, possibly including facing down Pakistan and Iran in the process if that bassackward country has any chance of surviving and thriving.
